At the Epidemiology and Prevention Division, we conduct research in human population such as local residents, visitors for a medical examination, hospital patients, etc., using epidemiological study methods under the following objectives.
- Investigation of causes of cancer (establish necessary scientific basis for cancer prevention)
- Development of cancer prevention methods (present effective and specific cancer prevention methods based on scientific facts)
Our main themes for 1) are
- (a) analytical epidemiologic study to explain the association between lifestyle and incidence of cancer,
- (b) molecular epidemiologic study, from a perspective of interaction with environmental factors, to explain the relationship with individual differences in genomic sequence (genetic factors) in development of cancer,
- (c) nutritional/biochemical epidemiologic study to explain the relationship with intake of nutrients/chemicals, from a perspective of potential prevention through supplying nutrients/chemicals
Our main themes for 2) are
- (a) Development of cancer prevention methods through improvements of lifestyle and evaluation of their efficacy,
- (b) Development of individualized cancer prevention methods taking in biomarkers that include genome information, and evaluation of their efficacy,
- (c) Evaluation of efficacy of cancer prevention methods with chemical substances.
